Truck Rental Tips
A
truck rental could
be a money saving alternative, but with a little research
and preparation the savings could go even further. We have
outlined a few basic tips:
|
| Determine the size of the vehicle |
|
|
|
The customer
service staff at most rental agencies will provide available
sizes and based on your load requirements they may offer
specifications and size suggestions. If you are unsure,
it may make sense to go for a slightly larger vehicle.
|
| The destination plays an important role |
|
|
|
Are you moving
within city limits or across state lines? If your destination
crosses state barriers, you may have to opt for a one-way
trip, for which many truck rental companies charge an extra
return trip fee. You will also need to check if the rental
company allows you to drop-off the vehicle at the destination
location.
|
| Book in advance to avoid the seasonal
trap |
|
|
|
As with
every business, the moving truck rental industry
has its peaks and valleys. Usually around the holidays,
May through September for instance, the industry
experiences its peak season and availability may
be more restricted-and expensive. Try booking in
advance if your move coincides with these peak months.
|
| Read the fine print many times
over; get multiple quotes |
|
|
|
Is your
service provider charging on a per mile basis? Do
the charges fluctuate depending on the number of
miles? Some truck rental companies, for example,
charge an additional fee or a per mile fee if you
exceed a certain number of miles. It is always in
your best interest to compare multiple truck rental
companies’ quotes. The contract may specify other
items, such as fines, deposit requirements, towing
fees, gas fees, etc. For your convenience, our comprehensive
resource directory allows you to do just that—compare
multiple van rental companies and save.
|
| Do you need additional equipment? |
|
|
|
Moving truck rental companies
are aware that you may need equipment to facilitate
your move and may provide moving or packaging equipment
for an additional price.

 |
What about insurance
While insurance requirements vary by state, rental
agencies do offer insurance. Don't forget to consider
insurance related factors, such as costs, deductible,
coverage, theft, and other factors to ensure adequate
coverage. |
 |
Take frequent breaks
It may be a good idea to take a small test ride
to rule out any issues-leaks, performance, tires,
brakes, lights, wipers, etc. This would be even
more necessary if you are moving long distance. |
 |
What about car towing
Does your vehicle offer the possibility of towing
your car? If so, it may be an added convenience
as both you and your car could travel together. |
 |
The gas tank could empty your
wallet
Many truck rental companies ask that you return
a full tank or else you may have to pay for the
difference. Some agencies require that refuel onsite
while others are more flexible. Also, make sure
you understand whether your vehicle works on diesel
(most large vehicles do), which may turn out be
a cost-saver. If you are going to travel a large
distance, fill the gas wherever available-just in
case you don't find quality of gas you may need. |
